Dr. Marianna Dourou is a Biologist with a Ph.D. in Microbiology (University of Patras, Greece). Currently, she is a Postdoctoral fellow at the University of Milan in Italy. She has worked, among other issues, on i) the aerobic or anaerobic bioconversion of organic wastes to high added-value compounds, using heterotrophs (i.e., yeasts and fungi) and autotrophs (i.e., microalgae), ii) the elucidation of metabolic pathways of oleaginous microorganisms, iii) the ability of microalgae to sequester CO2 released by a biological activity and iv) biocontrol strategies for managing plant pathogens. It is of her interest to work under the principles of circular bio-economy and sustainability, using low-cost and energy-saving technologies able to be scaled up and adopted by the agriculture or aquaculture sector.
