Dr. Juraj Krajčovič is currently Head of the Department of Biology and Professor of Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences University of SS Cyril & Methodius in Trnava, Slovakia. Till January 2017 his scientific and pedagogical career was primarily connected with the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. Here he graduated in Biology in 1978, obtained his PhD in 1987 and was teaching different subjects in this area to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Within years 1997-2011 he was a director of the Institute of Cell Biology and Biotechnology there. His favorite research object/model organism is the flagellate Euglena gracilis especially its plastids. Current Research Interests: Molecular cell biology; gene structure and expression; protein import into organelles, primarily chloroplasts; molecular diagnostics; molecular evolution, DNA identification of microorganisms, plastids as drug targets; the origin and evolution of the cell; extremophiles, algae as photobioreactors. Teaching activities: General biology, Molecular cell biology, Genetics, Evolutionary biology; Selected chapters in molecular biology, microbiology and biotechnology.
